Carmen builds sustainability daily by following a logical procedure:
1st - Define, 2nd - Measure, 3rd - Manage
1st - Define
According to the definition given by the United Nations' Brundtland Commission, WCED 1987, sustainability is "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs"
For Carmen being sustainable means to find a point of convergence for being environmentally friendly, being socially equitable, and being economically viable.
2nd - Measure
Chilean and international standards are used to measure sustainability:
• National
NATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY CODE - Sustainability Certification from the Chilean Wine Industry
In 2011, Carmen received the "Certified Sustainable Wine of Chile" seal, which is a certification that was developed by Wines of Chile together with the Chilean Universities and focuses on three main areas: vineyards, wineries, and community.
• International
Global Reporting Initiative
Sustainability Reporting Methodology, under the Global Reporting Initiative, used by the most important companies in the world to communicate their sustainability management as regards environment, society and economy.
Carmen has developed its first Sustainability Report 2009/2010..
3rd - Manage
Sustainability management throughout the entire winemaking process to produce improvements in all the different stages, from the field to the glass:
Vineyards
In order to protect our vineyards biodiversity and preserve today's natural richness for future generations, we have carried out a series of technical studies that allow us to strictly supervise the biological conditions in our vineyards so as to ensure sustainable agriculture practices.
The most important studies include:
. Climate studies (satellite thermal images)
. Geo-referenced soil studies
. Constant supervision of all the elements of the ecosystem. Decrease in the use of synthetic fertilizers thanks to focused applications; it is even possible to completely avoid using them for some years.
. Decrease in the use of chemical products to correct the soils pH by avoiding their application in homogeneous surfaces.
. Information to progressively increase the use of green pesticides.
Wineries:
Constant multi-residue analyses are carried out and a historical database is kept. All of this is done to take precautions in relation to food security and to ensure a constant quality control.
Marketing:
Carmen is a leader in the development of lighter bottles, which decreases the amount of glass used and the generation of polluting gases during the manufacturing process and transport. This is done for the specific purpose of protecting the environment and using the resources efficiently.
Society: Workers and Community
"Carmen is in the stock market, it should aim at generating profits for the shareholders; however, the winery's parent company is the Claro Vial Foundation, whose main concern is education; therefore, the winery benefits that belong to the parent company (Claro Vial Foundation) are invested in education."
With the aim of helping society in general and our community in particular, Carmen has developed strong policies regarding alcohol and drug addictions, which include cultural activities, the family week, and extracurricular activities.
